A Shepherd's Heart

Reading of the Day: Exodus 2-4

Exodus 2:19: And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.

You might be wondering why I would talk about a shepherd's heart in this instance...clearly, an Egyptian was the hero in this Scripture, delivering some women out of the hand of some shepherds. And that's exactly what stood out to me about this passage! Normally in Scripture, shepherds are referenced in a favorable way, and Egyptians are referenced in a sinful way. But here, Moses is the "Egyptian" who found his way to Midian. He was running away from Pharaoh because he killed an Egyptian for being harsh with a Hebrew...and that's because, at heart, Moses himself was a true Hebrew-so he was just trying to stick up for his real family, although not in the best way. So here he finds himself at a well in Midian, where some shepherds were being unkind to some women in not allowing them to draw water for their flocks. So, Moses comes in & helps them out, allowing them to draw water. So, who had the true shepherd's heart? This reading went right along with the preaching we heard tonight at our youth service-Moses had a choice: to follow his raising, or follow the revelation of who God said he was in his burning bush experience! Jesus is the true Good Shepherd, watching out for His children & flock, and Moses did the same! He may have come out of Egypt, but that's the truth of it all...He. Came. Out! He left Egypt physically & fled to Midian, showing his true potential as a true shepherd. Then, he fled Egypt spiritually as he followed the call of God upon his life! We may come out of a crazy past life ourselves. We may be running from some mistakes. But God looks on our heart & sees our true potential! He sees a shepherd's heart! But it's our choice to either embrace it, or embrace the title of an Egyptian. Let's expose our shepherd's heart & leave Egypt behind in Jesus' Name!
