A Statement, not a Sentence.

Reading of the Day: Genesis 4-6

Genesis 4:13: And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

It might be hard to move forward with this new year if we think about the difficulties of the last. Of course, there are so many things to cherish & appreciate, but there are also things we should definitely leave behind. That's not to say that we should not own up to the things we've done, and there may still be some consequences to face...but there is no punishment, no sacrifice, which takes the place of that which Christ did for us on the cross! In the beginning of the Bible, Cain echoes this statement through the rest of the ages: "My punishment is greater than I can bear." When we come to this realization and feel the burden of heavy guilt & shame, we certainly want to say the same thing...but we must remember, this is our statement, but Jesus took the ultimate sentence! He took the sentence which our sins deserved. He took the pain & agony, and beyond that one event, He continues to reach for us so we can hand Him our heavy hearts today! His faithfulness is incredible. His love is eternal. This one statement never became our sentence. Yes, we mess up...and 2024 could have been a year where we felt more like a failure than a champion...but when we repent, we turn that sorrow into joy! As a song states, "We dance on the grave we once lived in!" We can state that the punishment may be great, but Jesus is greater! He conquered death to bring us life in 2025!
