An Unlikely Story

Reading of the Day 5/2/25: 1 Chronicles 26-28

1 Chronicles 28:5: And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.

In reading through the legacy of the line of David, it is not very predictable or ideal for that matter! Even before David's birth, we see that he was a descendant of sorrowful situations & mixed cultures. We can remember back to Ruth, who was a widow Moabite & stranger to the Israelites, but she was desperate enough to follow her mother-in-law Naomi to her homeland of her people and her God. She married into this precious bloodline, and a few generations later, David was born. David ended up being born of a woman who was not the wife of his father, and so he felt outcasted at times...and then, somehow, David grows, defies the "odds," and is anointed & appointed by God to become king! And although he was a great king, his one major mistake that we can pinpoint during his reign actually led to the next heir to the throne: his son Solomon, born of another woman who was not his wife (just like his parents before him). In the above Scripture, this crazy turn of events is emphasized! David had many sons, but it was Solomon, the one who would seem as though he wasn't meant to be, who becomes the next king by God's divine appointment! I think that's why David points out here that he has many sons. Any of them could have been chosen. Anyone who was the right age & following all the right procedures & protocols...but as we can see from this family's pattern, God doesn't always work like that! He doesn't choose the "likely story" or the "predictable case." He chooses the unlikely outcast! The one who isn't as concerned with impressing the crowd! The one everyone else forgot about! God's recipes include many flavors-and they all have an interesting story! Next time you think you're unusable or don't belong, think again! You're exactly who God is looking for! Each one of us plays into this unlikely story somehow, no matter our background...the important thing is to let Him lead us for the rest of the journey!
