At a Standstill
Based on Exodus 13-14
"And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever." Exodus 14:13
The definition of a "standstill" is a halt, stop, pause, deadlock or any form of being stuck and incapable of moving forward. This was the case of Moses & the Israelites when they approached the Red Sea. They felt Egyptian bondage closing in behind them again, and an ocean prison also lay before them. That's it. A standstill. Some thought they were better off in the old bondage instead of even taking the chance at freedom...the excitement began to fade...but God quickly told them in this standstill to just... stand still...and see the salvation of The Lord!
"And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided." Exodus 14:21
He makes a way where there seems to be no way! He helps us to stand still IN the standstill! To stand firm. To stand sure & strong knowing God will go with us, even in the face of a massive body of water as in the Israelites' case! So what does this salvation mean for us? How can we "stand still" and see the salvation of The Lord today? Turns out, much the same way Moses & God's people did it! By going through the water! When we are baptized in Jesus' Name under water, we are buried with Christ. All our sin, all our Egypt is washed away...we then rise up in newness of life, and receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost, just like the pillar of cloud that went before the Israelites! There was also a pillar of fire though...and we know that with the Holy Ghost comes a fire & passion for Spiritual things & reaching the lost, and helping them break away from their Egypts. Their standstills. So the question becomes, do we want to be able to have peace & stand still in the storm, or come to a standstill & be swallowed up by the waves?
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Acts 2:38
