Bringing Back The King
Reading of the Day: 2 Samuel 19-21
2 Samuel 19:12 Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?
We now approach a torn kingdom, divided between Judah & the rest of the tribes of Israel. As we read previously, David does not reign long over all the tribes (Judah & Israel together), before Absalom his son defies him & splits the loyalty of the kingdom. On top of that, some people still supported the family of Saul & his reign. Things were just a mess! But now, this torn kingdom is on its way to be mended once again. All of David's reign could be looked at as a giant quilt-instead of one big blanket of the same fabric, there are different pieces, sizes & materials used over time to show one big picture...it's scattered, messy, but just shows the ups & downs of life in such a real way. This kingdom was no fairy tale! After Absalom is killed, David mourns greatly for him...so much so that Joab, David's leader in battle, rebukes him! Not many truly understood David's heart...but David composes himself & sits in the gate wondering & asking the words in the above Scripture-"are ye the last to bring back the king?" At this point, David may have wondered...who is going to stay loyal? Who is going to stay faithful? Who is going to welcome me with open arms? David knew that The Lord anointed him as the rightful king, and he was once again just waiting to be accepted. Even still, one more person rises up to try to be king of the tribes of Israel while David was accepted back as king over Judah-his name was Sheba. After an interesting series of events (always worth the read for yourself!), Sheba is killed & David does reign over all once again. Is God sitting near the gate of our hearts? Is He wondering who will bring the King back? Maybe we have tossed back and forth between serving God & serving ourselves. Maybe our childhood prayers never made it to adulthood. Maybe it's been a while since we opened our Bibles. Maybe, it's time to bring back The King! And just like David was never meant to partially reign over some of the tribes, God is not only meant to have part of us-He is meant to have all of us! We must welcome Him back with open arms! We must bring Him from the gate to the throne of our hearts! It's time to bring The King back home as the rightful Ruler of our lives, and we will enjoy what The Lord does in us!
