Dig Beneath the Surface

Based on Genesis 26-27

"And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them." Genesis 26:18

Does your to-do list seem to get longer & longer? As you look over the many tasks, does it seem like too great of an undertaking? I'm sure that's how Isaac felt, looking out over the land at the many plugged-up wells. "Where do I start?" He must have thought. "Should I even pursue this? Is it worth my time & effort??" Another great sermon from our Pastor was on these very wells. We need to go back to the old wells sometimes & spend time working on them, digging them up once again. This was a project which was around since his father Abraham. It was on Isaac's to-do list for a while to maintain these, and he was willing to dig beneath the surface to get the job done. Do we have any plugged-up potential that we've been ignoring? Maybe it's time to dig beneath the surface of God's Word & tap into His Truth as our Source of strength!

"And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water."

Genesis 26:19

What's behind well number 1!? We'll never know until we take the plunge! It's so easy & tempting to stop at the surface-that hard, intimidating exterior which requires so much work & effort to get through-but once we do, a well of springing potential awaits us! Has it been awhile since you've dusted off your Bible, or swept the cobwebs out of your prayer closet? Let's all make it a goal to unplug and unpile the debris from our path on our walk with God, and dig a little deeper!

"And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake. And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well." Genesis 26:24‭-‬25

A blessing, a sacrifice, and another well! When God gives, we should give of our time & talents in sacrifice to Him-then, we need to get to work on that next well in our lives! When we've been blessed, and we've sacrificed in praise & thanksgiving, what do we have to fear!? We can only expect the work at the next well to pay off as we trust God and draw from His strength!

"Let people serve thee, And nations bow down to thee: Be Lord over thy brethren, And let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: Cursed be every one that curseth thee, And blessed be he that blesseth thee." Genesis 27:29

This last verse was not concerning Isaac & his wells, but concerning Jacob & his passion to go beyond many obstacles in order to have a birthright & blessing. Although he used deceptive strategies with the help of Rebekah his mother, beneath the surface, he was someone more desirous of the things of God than his older brother Esau-so Jacob was the blessed one. The elder truly ended up serving the younger...unlike Jacob, we don't need to use deception to dig deeper into the things of God-we just need to dig into the Truths in His Word & open up a well of potential with the flow of Living Water, our God, saturating all the dry spaces of our lives!
