Many people, Another Family Chosen

"These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood." Genesis 10:32. Genesis 10 lists the many families & generations of the sons of Noah after the flood. If you take a look, it's quite a long list of names! Although it's very impressive and detailed, one thing that's so fascinating about it is that each person's birth led to the next person & family God would use in His plan. So, each person's life is significant! After Noah, the next great person we read about in the lineage is Abraham.

Let's put things into context-right before Abraham's call from God, the Tower of Babel situation takes place. It was yet another case of rebellion against God by the majority of people on earth. "And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do." Genesis 11:6. Just like the exposure to good & evil in the garden, the Tower of Babel was an exposure to power that would allow the people to rely on themselves and not God. So, this gathering of people in one place with one language became a scattering of many people, with many languages, in many nations. Yet God had in mind another faithful family he would use to fulfill His plan: the family of Abraham.

"Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:"
Genesis 12:1‭-‬2.

Abraham (formerly Abram) would be blessed and be a blessing. Although Sarah (formerly Sarai) his wife was barren at the time this promise was given, God said Abraham would be a great nation. In our next readings, we will see how God uses this faithful family and blesses them with many children. We can follow this pattern with many families in the Bible, and as Moms, let's make sure our families rely on God's plan & trust His promises too!
