Out of Uniform

Based on 1 Chronicles 25-27, John 9:1-23

"Out of the spoils won in battles did they dedicate to maintain the house of the LORD. And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; and whosoever had dedicated any thing, it was under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren." 1 Chronicles 26:27‭-‬28

Everything was given to God from the spoils won in battles...but also, every effort was given of each tribe of Israel in order to maintain the house of The Lord. The people had it down to a science, down to the very number, of how things should work and what should be done. From groups of 12 to groups of 24,000, everyone had a specific role in serving The Lord...and while it's important to maintain the purpose of serving Him, Jesus shows us it's ok to get a little "out of uniform" sometimes!

"Also Jonathan David's uncle was a counsellor, a wise man, and a scribe: and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king's sons: and Ahithophel was the king's counsellor: and Hushai the Archite was the king's companion: and after Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar: and the general of the king's army was Joab." 1 Chronicles 27:32‭-‬34

The above listing sounded so important...counselor, wise man, scribe, king's companion...and while these were very important roles, Jesus shows us that His role as King is most powerful, and we must remember that He is The True King we are ultimately serving. If He is calling us out of tradition to share Truth, then we can't be afraid to change our role up a bit!

"Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them." John 9:16

There was division because the things Jesus did were "out of uniform." And that doesn't mean immodest or improper, it just means "out of tradition." We see this vast past lineage in Chronicles of how things were done, and although it wasn't wrong, things were meant to change for the better when Jesus comes on the scene! He showed them the true heart behind the service...will we be too comfortable to step out in faith?
