The Beauty of Desperation
Based on Psalms 1-3, Acts 17:1-15
"But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; My glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the LORD with my voice, And he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, That have set themselves against me round about."
Psalm 3:3-6
We are in the Book of Psalms! Every single book of the Bible gives us something we need, but the encouragement which flows from Psalms is quite unique! David, and later Jesus, both reference the Book of Psalms! In reading these first few chapters, we can see that immediately David speaks to our reliance on God in desperate times. Yes, some times are urgently requiring some sort of reaction or response from us, but our desperation for God should be even greater! No matter how good or bad the times are, we need to have a beautiful countenance of desperation about us which allows us not to fear even ten thousand people!
"And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go. And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews." Acts 17:8-10
As the Psalm says, He is a shield for us! This Psalm rang true in the hearts of Paul, Silas and Jason...God always made a way of escape for them! But right after their escape from one Jewish synagogue, they went and preached in another! This Psalm must have been replaying in their hearts and minds in order to have that kind of strength! They VOLUNTARILY went into desperate situatione because they were first VOLUNTARILY desperate in their reliance on God and their passion to preach! How beautiful is that!
What's our desperation right now? How quick are we to turn away from Our Shield, Our Glory & The Lifter Up of our heads? Let's beautifully and desperately turn to Him today, and not turn away!
