The Blessing of Brokenness

Bible Reading Today: Jeremiah 51-52

Jeremiah 52:7 Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain.

Although there's a lot of sadness surrounding the breaking down of Jerusalem and the scattering of the Jews, there actually is a very good lesson to be learned from it all...while that may seem like an odd perspective to take, it does start to make sense when we really think about the blessing that brokennesscan be. A plant cannot live and grow without breaking up the soil, although that means soil particles are separated from one another. A heart cannot be changed unless it is soft, tender & easy to work with. The Jews could not learn to love God again without feeling the heartbrokenness which comes from having your city broken up & being divided and scattered among the nations. Although it would have been nice if the Israelites listened & loved God the whole time, they learned to love again through brokenness. When something is broken into, we think of thieves...but think about it...it also causes an opening. What was meant for evil from the Babylonians breaking in was used for good so that God's people would long for Him again. Is God trying to use brokenness to create an opening in our lives? Are we hardened and closed off from His presence? Let go, let God & let's see how much of a blessing brokenness actually is! Pour it all out to God in prayer!
