The Empty Well

Reading of the Day 4/16/25: 2 Kings 3-5

2 Kings 4:26: Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.

This is an incredible verse & response to crisis. The prophet Elisha told his servant to run to this woman who was on her way to see Elisha. Earlier on, this woman made room for Elisha in her home voluntarily. She knew he was a man of God, and she wanted to be hospitable to him. So, she & her husband made a special room for him any time he came through town. Elisha was so thankful & asked what she would like from him. She had been barren & asked for a son, and Elisha promised that The Lord would fulfill it...and He did! But in this above crisis situation, the woman was running to Elisha because her son was sick & died...but she knew there was hope! When asked if all was well, she said yes! How many of us could do the same? Although she did cry out to him concerning her desperate situation, she was still able to claim all was well! Many of us, like the Israelites many chapters ago, would be stuck in the rut of complaining...but this woman spoke in faith that all was well! It may have been an empty "well". She may have felt barren once again. But in that empty "well," she knew God would be the one to fill her up again! And this fulfillment came in the restoration of her son! The prophet prayed over him & God healed him! When we bring our empty "it is well" to The Lord, He sees our hope against hope. He sees us being faithful even when it looks like it's over! Remember, a "well" is meant to be filled! Even if our "it is well" is empty, dry, and exhausted, God sees our willingness to give it & He will bless it! There are so many instances in these chapters where God filled empty spaces...there were ditches dug during a drought & God allowed rain, filled them with water & also used those same water-filled ditches to look like blood from afar to scare the enemies away! The only difference is that the people complained instead of holding onto hope, so God used those same ditches to not only provide water, but protection, in order to show that the people should never doubt Him...as we can see, we never need to doubt! God has already shown that He can and will fill the empty well, so we can always claim that it is well!
