THE GREATEST INVESTMENT

"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Matthew 6:21. In order to prepare, we invest. We invest money, time, talents, and many other things to be sure that our children are cared for, for years to come. However important, that investment only stretches as far as this life. We must also invest in our family's eternal well-being!

If our treasure is only buried in the comforts of this life, our investment doesn't stretch very far! Take the parable of the rich young ruler. He asked Jesus "what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (Luke 18:18). And Jesus told the man first about keeping the commandments, which he had already been diligently doing: "Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal...etc." (Luke 18:20). Then later in this same chapter, Jesus said the only thing that the man lacked is to come and follow Him. Sadly, the man went away sorrowful because he could not part with his riches.

First of all, it's important to note that this man was good at one thing: restraining. He could do the "do nots" of the commandments and withhold himself from behaving improperly, but he also withheld himself from acting at all when it came to his relationship with God! He was rich, which meant he was good at taking risks and making investments financially, but his investment in the Kingdom of God only stretched as far as what he would NOT do (not kill, not steal, etc.)

Second of all, because of all this, he missed the reason & purpose for saving money in the first place. We should be seeking the ways in which God desires us to spend & invest our money. His plan is MUCH more beneficial to us, especially because we take the focus off of ourselves and are able to effect the Kingdom positively as a whole! When our treasure becomes money, we miss the point entirely, because we do not have a focus on eternity.

The greatest investment is in Jesus. It's in teaching our children about how much He has invested in us, mainly through His sacrifice for us! Are we teaching our children to be wise with their money? Are we also teaching them to sacrifice? Money can easily lead our families astray & away from God if we are not careful! It's a constant personal prayer for my family to be investors in the work of God before investing in ourselves...to be willing to take leaps of faith for God's glory & not this world's gain.
