When nothing adds up...
"And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?"
Genesis 17:16-17. At this point in the process toward the promise of this child, as discussed in the previous post, there were still no results. Now, it seemed to be a laughing matter to Abram (now called Abraham). Nothing seemed to be adding up. He began to think, what was he waiting for? Sarai's (now Sarah's) condition can't change. She is too old to bear a child. Again, nothing was adding up!
In the beginning of this section, Sarai's impatience gets the best of her and she asks Abram to have a child with her handmaid, Hagar. This leads to the birth of Ishmael, who would grow up to be the father of the rival nations of Abraham. Even after this, God reminds him of the promise that Sarai will bear a son! Also, God established their new identities as Abraham and Sarah, meaning father & mother of many nations, but they both still laughed at the possibility. Remember when God had Abraham look to the stars so he could see the possibilities? God does so many things along the way to remind us that He is still there and He is still working. We just need to trust! But like I said, Abraham wasn't the only one who laughed...
"And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son." Genesis 18:13-14.
Is anything too hard for the Lord? The truth is, nothing needs to add up in our minds for God to do what He does! "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55:9.
So don't laugh in doubt, but rejoice in hope that God's got this!
